 Birds of prey, or raptors are attracted to Lumpy Ridge for its
crags, cracks and crevices. These rocky niches provide ideal nesting sites or
aeries that keep raptors returning year after year to raise their young. From
the lofty cliffs adult raptors scan the landscape for rodents and other prey to
feed their offspring. Birds of prey occupy the top of the food chain. Threats, such as pesticides, accumulate in predator species and can reduce their birth rates. A drop in raptor populations is one of the most reliable indicators of an ecosystem's declining health. Recently, stricter law and key habitat protection have stimulated a recovery in raptor populations. Birds found in the Twin Owls area are:
These raptor images were taken from a sign near the parking lot at Twin Owls. I have too much respect for these birds to pursue them in the wild just to capture their pictures.
